Introduction to Fermented Foods

  • Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church (map)

Microbes (bacteria) are all around us and inside of us. Scientists have only scratched the surface when it comes to understanding these amazingly small creatures. This symbiotic relationship with our microbiome can provide some amazing health benefits, especially for those with diabetes. In this class, we’ll talk about ways to add fermented foods to your diet and how you can easily incorporate these foods into your daily routine. Bring your questions. We’ll offer samples and fun fermentation activities!

Our speaker Anna Gianpetro, RDN, LD is a dietitian in Portland who is passionate about helping people make changes that stick. She works with clients’ nutrition needs ranging from eating disorders to diabetes to GI distress. She loves talking about food, trying new foods, eating food, and cooking food. In her spare time, she ferments pizza dough, oats, kombucha, vegetables and more!

Lessons for Living Longer

Lessons for Living Longer

  • Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Our March HDG gathering is inspired by the book The Blue Zones: Lessons for living longer from the people who have lived the longest by Dan Buettner. The idea for this book originated from a National Geographic study, looking at the regions of the world where people live long, healthy lives. These five regions of well-being have been dubbed “The Blue Zones”.

This month we will identify the features of healthy living that run across these cultures. Then, we will discuss ways we can adapt these traits to our own everyday lives.

You can find “The Blue Zones” in print form, digitally, and as an audio book. Both new and used copies are readily available. If you don’t read the book before we meet on March 15th, come anyway for the conversation!
